Brand Wars I

The world is at war. Just like nations, people, are at war, brands too try to outshine themselves in some silent subtle wars. Plus, its a global phenomenon. Brands in various categories and across industries strive to be more visible, gain top of the mind brand recall rate and ultimately, mind and wallet share which culminates in market share. This is really not about the war brand/marketing managers engage in to outshine one another. It is more about the activities engaged in to measure to their key performance indices. This is a 3 part series of evident wars I have noticed in Nigeria over the last few months between brands, people and even institutions... Part 1 is between consumer mobile brands Samsung and Tecno... Lets go there...

V is for Viral!

Image
I have always wanted to create my own A to Z of Marketing with marketing-related terms, something like a glossary. That project is still a work-in-progress for me and I hope to share it very soon. However, I have somewhat fast tracked that project to the alphabet V and tried to find a most suitable word for that alphabet: Viral! The happenings of the last few weeks have coincidentally affirmed this position. First of all, without boring you with the definition of viral, it is important to identify a few characteristics of something viral. Coined from the word virus, it can generate definitions from medical science to computer science. For the purpose of this post, Viral will be limited to Marketing. Viral X-rayed. In the context that the word Viral is used here, five main characteristics of viral are highlighted. These features are incidentally applicable from all of the marketing, medical and computer science perspectives: ·       ...

This 'Doro' Thing!

Image
What's good guys? What’s been happening to you lately? I’m sure we are all busy running the marketing race: positioning ourselves for competitive advantage, trying to outshine one another and generally adding value to some cause or ourselves. Great! This doro thing has been around town for a couple of weeks: Doro something must doro another thing to bring about something very doro….   I love music… No, I love good music and I love life. The Mavins’ track ‘Dorobucci’ is always on repeat whenever I decide to listen to it. I do have a whale of a time anytime I have it on. I am listening to it as I write and I always love it so… But really, this isn’t only about Don Jazzy, The Mavins and the song ‘Dorobucci’.   I have read so many comments about the song and I cannot but marvel at how the title of a song has become a slang. Same with Dr Sid’s “Surulere”. What dorobucci means and the context with which it is used is a different game entirely ( I have read a lot of fu...

#ChibokGirls, Cockroaches and Crisis Communication.

Image
Hey people… Its over 50 days that more than 200 schoolgirls were abducted. I have, like most Nigerians followed with interest, the series of events that has trailed the abduction of school girls in Chibok, Borno State – Nigeria. This is one situation that has put our country in the eyes of the entire universe. However, I’d like to reiterate the fact that this post is from a purely marketing angle. It is not in any way political. Let’s get down on it… You may ask: what has cockroaches got to do with this crisis Nigeria is facing with specific reference to the Chibok Girls’ abduction? Crisis is subtly defined as a threat that can inflict a potential damage and have a negative impact on a person, body, organisation or nation. Cockroaches like crisis are pests, live among human beings and are mostly nocturnal in nature, thriving in darkness ( shrouded in some mystery and secrecy). Crisis amongst other things have a strong influence on affecting...

Break the goddam box!

Hey people, It’s been a while here. My life has been on the fast lane in the last 8 to 10 weeks thereabout: managing projects, penning   a lot of ideas, drawing up a number of proposals, helping friends and associates develop their brands, writing thesis for a postgraduate qualification, coupled with my usual responsibilities as wife, mother, daughter, career woman et al…Really, my life on the ‘fast’ lane. In all of these however, I never forget to keep a tab on the things happening around me. I’m going to be sharing them here more regularly in a couple of weeks and I assure you, it’s will be quite interactive. Few weeks back, I had quite a challenge sending a 160 character congratulatory SMS to a senior colleague who was retiring from a Company I once worked with. My challenge was not because I didn’t know what to write but that I wanted to use certain words which could be misconstrued or were associated with certain events and situations. This is a sneak preview ...

Dare. Different. Denrele!

Image
Recently, while flipping through TV channels to find something of interest to watch, I made a stop at a music entertainment channel (Hip TV to be precise) because Denrele Edun was being interviewed. So I settled in my chair and listened to him. As a matter of fact, this isn’t my first time of seeing Denrele on TV or on the pages of a magazine, but something within me just arouse some curiousity about this ‘unusual’ guy.  Unusual shoes, clothing, hair… even his looks, the way he talks and his body language is kind of unusual. That curiosity is summarised in just one question: Who is Denrele? In my mind, I began to try to define who Denrele is to the best of my knowledge. At least by what he does. Is he an actor? Well, not so much that I know of except his not so active role in the movie, Omo Ghetto/ The Return of Jenifa. Is he musician? I do not think I have heard him sing or feature in a collabo. I have seen him feature in music videos though. Is he a dancer...

Love Has Got a Price Tag

Image
It’s noteworthy what the celebration of Valentine’s Day (not the celebration of love) has turned out to be in Nigeria over the past decade. Interestingly, Valentine’s Day is the next most celebrated ‘festival’ on the lunar calendar after New Year. Here, Valentine is synonymous with love and splashes of Red will be seen in the even smallest of places this season. Without trying to differentiate what Love is from what Valentine means, or discussing the true essence of Valentine, our minds are still echoing with memories of Friday, the 14 th : marriage proposals, break ups and heart breaks, high purchasing power (thank goodness that Valentine isn’t in January, the month people are broke after all yuletide expenses), dinner dates, deceit, traffic jam in major cities et al! This is the month of LOVE!   This post (and maybe the next) is dedicated to this month of love, the celebration of what love is and what price people pay for love. Whilst listening to Tina Turner’s classic, ‘w...

A Piece 'off' my Marketing Mind

Image
The world around us changes every single day.   Whatever it used to be called in those days is not as important as what it is called now: a global village (even though, in my own eyes, I see it not beyond a matchbox). We live life as it comes every day. Everybody looks: some see, many don’t. Whether by training or by my professional career or default, I have began to see things happen from an underlying marketing point of view over the past few years.   Here, I will share my thoughts with you every other week on the things that I see from different points of view but definitely with a marketing perspective. We are all marketing beings whichever way you look at it. These are my thoughts… Life's Wants Abraham Maslow’s   hierarchy of needs   in the ‘wants of life’ pyramid with man’s quest for the basic things of life such as food, clothing, shelter, love and sex at the bottom of the pyramid to the self actualisation needs at the top confirms man’s need to be ...
